MOTHRA was founded in 2018 by Sarah Cullen with the help of Alison Thompson. The project runs artist residencies, agitates around the rights of caregivers, produces a zine, and exhibits together.

The artists in this exhibition are all part of the MOTHRA network and have all been participants in a MOTHRA residency at some point over the last five years.

As a group we were intrigued by the themes of the eclipse: an event in which light is obscured from one celestial body by the passage of another between it and the observer. The feeling of a loss of significance, that one’s light has been obscured, can be common amongst parents and carers in relation to their child, but also in relation to how an artist-parent might feel in relation to their practice as well as with the art world in which they participate.

However, an eclipse is also a time when people come together. We marvel at the rarity, of the mystery, of the beauty of an eclipse. They are a spectacular sight. This is not unlike a MOTHRA residency, where for a short fleeting time we gather under the same roof with our children. We make work, cook, read, talk, and play together. After, we go back to our regular lives, albeit slightly changed forever, transformed.

A patriarchal mode of working and making art has dominated our lives as artists as it has throughout our culture. To be taken seriously in most fields you are expected to sever your links with personal relationships - such as family - in order to be successful. MOTHRA is attempting to push back against this.

We are here to acknowledge the parent/artist relationship, often overlooked in contemporary art, and to set a precedent that one can still be an artist and a mother/father/carer of a child and that these roles can conflate.

Join a few of the artists in the gallery for a hands on workshop making 5 min sculptures, printing and paper works. Participants are welcome to leave a piece as part of the show. Materials will be provided. No experience necessary, open to parents, kids and kid-like creatives.

Alison Thompson is an interdisciplinary artist raising children (4 & 9), in Tkaronto. The parameters for making art that Alison inherited from her university experiences at OCADU and the University of Guelph have been exploded in a beautiful way as she includes child and caregiving activity as necessary influences on her work. Alison has spent the past nine years being slow and studying the curious pathways that this shift has caused in her approach to creating. The result of this experience is an arsenal of new relationships to materials, techniques and ways of thinking that are directing her process.

During the past four years, under the influence of all the scrap paper waste from family life, Alison has found herself pushing at the boundaries of her painting and reaching for collage as a solution. Currently her practice involves lots of collage, mini art books, and drawing.

In 2017, after a year of participating in Lenka Clayton’s Artist in Residence in

Who’s practice is rooted within the language of sculpture and space. She holds an MFA from Concordia University and is based in Hamilton, Ontario. Her work is centred within a dialogue of place, built environments, and notions of belonging and longing. More recently, she has been concentrating on textile as embodied objects and sites of water as a connector to self, tradition, and home. She has participated in several group exhibitions at Eastern Edge, Cambridge Galleries, Dare-Dare, Art-Mur, Burlington Arts Centre, as well as solo exhibitions at Forest City Gallery, and Latcham Gallery. She has

Fieldcote is a cultural heritage centre that collects and exhibits local history and promotes fine arts in Ancaster. The Tudor-revival house is set in three hectares (7 acres) of park and woodlands featuring walking trails, public art and award-winning gardens.


The wrecks of the Hamilton and Scourge are a designated Historic Site of Canada. Designed as merchant schooners, both vessels were converted into American warships when the War of 1812 began and each played a role in the capture of Fort George on May 27, 1813. While stationed off Port Dalhousie, they capsized and sank with a loss of over 50 lives during a sudden squall in the early morning of August 8, 1813. Discovered 90 metres below the surface of Lake Ontario in 1973, these remarkably preserved wrecks are outstanding archaeological records of shipbuilding and naval warfare of their time. The ships are in remarkably good condition, despite their initial sinking and despite some decay brought about by the passage of years at lake bottom. 2008 sonar image shows the wreck of the Scourge resting on the bottom of Lake Ontario. This National Historic Site is home to the 2020 art installation Eagles Among Us. Created by Indigenous artist David General, it is dedicated to peace and reconciliation after the war. Battlefield Park and the Gage house occupy land traditionally used by Indigenous peoples. In the early 19th century, the Gage family farmhouse was a community hub for farmers, itinerant preachers and Indigenous peoples who came to meet and trade at James Gage’s store. A monument built in 1913 commemorates a War of 1812 battle on the site. It was commissioned by the Women’s Wentworth Historical Society, one of the first all-women’s historical societies in Canada.


Located in downtown Hamilton, the house known as Whitehern was home to three generations of the McQuesten family. In 1959, the three surviving members of the family bequeathed the home to the City together with its original contents. The house and gardens opened as a museum in 1971. The McQuesten family’s history includes several distinguished members who were responsible for the development of industry in Hamilton and for parks, highways, bridges, and landmarks throughout the Golden Horseshoe and Niagara and other parts of Ontario.


The Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology is located in the 1859 Hamilton Waterworks. Constructed with limestone and dolomite quarried in Stoney Creek, the building still houses the two massive rotative beam engines which originally pumped water from Lake Ontario to a reservoir above the city. The Museum preserves and interprets the original waterworks complex and through it the social and mechanical life of Canada’s early industrial revolution. The Hamilton Waterworks has been designated a Canadian Civil and Power Engineering Landmark.

The Hamilton Military Museum preserves and shares the military history of Hamilton and area through exhibits, programs and events. The building that houses it was originally constructed as a gate house for Dundurn Castle by Sir Allan MacNab in the late 1830s. It was first known as Battery Lodge as it is located on the site of a War of 1812 artillery emplacement.

Housed in an 1875 farmhouse in Gage Park, the Hamilton Children’s Museum invites young visitors to stretch their imagination as they touch, build and experiment in a friendly, child-focused setting. We are conveniently located off the 403 and have a bus stop in front of the building for families travelling by transit. You’ll also find our designated Kidco parking spots make drop-off and pick-up easy for caregivers.

Our 7 classrooms can accommodate 92 children from newborn to 5 years old. Each room has a webcam so that caregivers can check in throughout the day. Our centre has large windows to allow for lots of natural light, as well as a great outdoor play area with both shaded and sunny areas so that children can enjoy the fresh air year round.

We offer Infant, Toddler, Preschool and Kindergarten programs with the option of full-time, part-time, or backup care. Children are also provided with a hot lunch and 3 snacks each day, catered by our Kidco Kitchen.
