At Strata, we offer young adults real learning opportunities with meaningful challenges and authentic consequences. They participate in the life of the community by learning through hands-on activities and meaningful projects. Students find their value and are prepared for their times and cultures.

Strata takes a lab approach to mathematics. Sessions include warm up mental exercises, small group project work, formal lessons and independent follow-up work. Students work on concept material in a variety of modes and at their own pace. Topics in arithmetic, statistics and probability, algebra and geometry are covered.

Science occupations are integrated science projects that arise naturally from the needs of the Strata property and of the community. These projects include beekeeping, water quality management, food preservation, gardening and many other areas of study. Classes combine meaningful hands-on work and responsibility with scientific investigation and study.

The humanities program is designed to tell the story of humanity from our origins as hunter-gatherers to life in the modern world. Quarterly, throughout the year, students choose one of several topics offered for intensive study. Local and Canadian History is incorporated into the framework, as are current events.

Literature is studied in four to five-week book groups, as well as in the context of humanities studies and science occupation projects. Students choose from a range of offerings, but are guided to study works that present an appropriate challenge for their ability. Literature study includes seminar discussion techniques, written responses, and critical interpretation.

Creative expression is essential to adolescent development, as young people explore and experiment with their emerging identities. Creative expression is offered in a series of eight-week projects where students experience diverse modes of expression. Classes include pottery, jewelry making, blacksmithing, painting, creative writing, weaving and many others.

Physical Expression is important to young adolescents, providing a focus for their physical energy, an exposure to a range of activities that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle, and an opportunity to challenge themselves. Physical expression classes include yoga, orienteering, running club, winter sports, canoeing, dance, fencing, hiking, and many more.

Located on a picturesque 50-acre property, Waterdown Montessori School sits on the cusp of the Iroquoia section of the Bruce Trail. Montessori is a child-centred method of education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori succeeded in creating a method of education in which children learn from working with specialized educational materials designed specifically for Montessori classrooms- these learning materials develop the child’s cognitive capabilities through direct experience (seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting and movement) rather than by direct instruction. Montessori education recognizes that children learn in different ways and are free to pursue their interests and learn at their own pace. Children are encouraged to think critically, to be curious, to ask questions, to probe deeply and to make connections. Montessori education helps to develop children’s emerging “self-regulating” skills through daily routines, carefully designed classrooms and learning materials meticulously arranged in an aesthetically pleasing environment. Hallmarks of the Montessori method include multiage groupings and uninterrupted work periods.

In Montessori classrooms, the schedule allows for long periods of uninterrupted “work time”, with few transitions, to allow for the development of concentration, focus and engagement. Multiage groupings fosters peer learning and supports the concept that learning is a social process and prepares children for the real world where people socialize and work with people of all ages. Authentic Montessori programs also insist on five-day schedules (either full day or half day) and this is based on the belief that children thrive on consistency and only regular attendance provides the continuity they need.

The aim of Montessori education is to help students achieve their potential and become confident, respectful, responsible, self-directed learners with an understanding that learning is for life. Visitors are amazed by the concentration and focus of the children, and the happy hum in each classroom. Because independence and self-discipline are such integral components of the program, children are able to work responsibly and confidently on their own, meaning that the teachers are able to give individual attention to students.

Our family’s experience with WMS was above and beyond our expectations.

With the enrolment of our three-year old son, we immediately noticed development in his personality, and his communication with adults and especially other children.

Two years later he has come so far, from the boy who struggled to communicate his thoughts and feelings to a boy who can read and write. He has grown to be a compassionate individual with a love for science and nature. With his learning, and influence from the staff at WMS he has held out his hand and taken it upon himself to lead his little sister in the discovery of all that he has had the opportunity to explore.

With that in mind it was an obvious decision when we enrolled our eighteen-month old daughter in the Casa program at WMS. Quickly following her brother’s footsteps, our daughter has matured in leaps and bounds. She surprises us daily with her new songs and stories, and continues to educate us on many of her new learnings and experiences she has developed at Waterdown Montessori. Thank you to the staff at WMS for all that you have done.

I want to thank the teachers in Toddler for the amazing work they have done with my Emelia. Today she came home and took off her own shoes, has started counting, told stories about the teacher showing her folding today and folded clothes at home before napping today. Thank you for your care and I am enjoying the stories she is sharing at home.

She waved goodbye to her classroom today and said, “See you Monday.”
