The Island Lake First Nation Family Services was originally established and operated under the auspices of the Awasis Agency of Northern Manitoba in April 30, 1983. On April 21, 1997 the Island Lake First Nation Family Services was incorporated as its own entity and agency.

The Northern Authority is the parent authority for the Island Lake First Nation Family Services and has the responsibility for administering and providing for the delivery of child and family services to families who identify as northern First Nations as specified in the regulations.

Island Lake region consists of four communities: Garden Hill First Nation, St. Theresa Point First Nation, Wasagamack First Nation, and Red Sucker Lake First Nation with the total population of well over 10,000. In its 2015 strategic plan, Island Lake First Nations Family Services noted its analysis from 2001 Canada Census:

51% of the total population of Garden Hill were youth from ages 0-19

In St. Theresa Point, 50% of the total population were youth from ages 0-19

In Wasagamack, 51% of the total population were youth from ages 0-19

Permanency Planning Program for Island Lake First Nations Family Services is a regional program that provide services in three main categories or areas but they all connect together: Permanent Ward Services, Transitioning – Age of majority, and Adoptions. Permanency Planning works with Child & Family Service Workers, Resource Workers and the family members involved.
