The Winnipeg Theatre School is one of the city's oldest operating acting schools, offering performance-orientated classes for children, teens, and adults in the Exchange District.

Originally established as The Theatre School at Fantasy Theatre for Children by Mr Tony Frost in 1981, the school became a part of Merlyn Productions in 2011.

Instructors are local professionals who tailor their individual courses to provide quality training at competitive rates.

Students from Expressions have acted in productions such as Tales from the Loop, A Dog's Purpose, Channel Zero, Heaven is for Real, Nobody, and other locally filmed shows and movies.

While we our proud of the roles our students have landed, getting parts is not a measure of success at our studio. If one of your goals is to act in real movies or TV shows, Expressions will guide you through the practical steps of auditioning for real productions. We think landing a part in a movie is an admirable goal for any actor who takes their craft seriously and is focused on the work - not the 'fame'.

Our goal is to teach your child the skill of acting. We are a professional school with qualified Instructors and carefully crafted lesson plans; therefore, your child will undoubtedly acquire new skills. Will these skills help your child get parts? The short answer to this is yes.

Now that is not a guarantee as the film industry works a lot on various factors that are many times outside of the actor’s control; however, practicing scene work, auditions, and improv will build confidence in your child’s skill set and that will surely lend its hand in your child’s performance career. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Michael Strickland began his acting career with theatre at the age of 7 in school plays.

He spent 6 years living in Vancouver, where he graduated from the Vancouver Film School in 2014 with honors.


He then became an instructor for Arts Umbrella in South Surrey, where for 5 years he taught Acting for the Camera, The Art of Acting, Theatre Works, Creative Drama, and Musical Theatre. With his friend Paneet Singh, they managed to completely revamp the theatre and film department and made it one of the most sought-after programs in history at the Arts Umbrella - South Surrey location.

He has trained with numerous casting executives and directors including Jane Jenkins, Deborah Aquila, and Seth Yanklewitz, as well as coaches Andrew McIlroy, Bart Anderson, Matthew Lillard, and Leslie Kahn. He has spent the past few years specializing in techniques from theatre practitioners such as Adler, Meisner, Stanislavski, Chekov and Spolin. He returned to Winnipeg in 2019 and looks to bring a fresh new approach to the arts community that will push actors to go deeper and farther in their work.
