My name is Lyra Evans, and I'm seeking the OCDSB Trustee for Zone 6 & Chair of the Board


Lyra is currently the OCDSB School Board Trustee for Rideau-Vanier and Rideau-Rockcliffe Wards.

Lyra is an environmental chemist and activist, having done research at the University of Ottawa with the Fogg Group. She has also been a long-time community activist, having worked with organisations like *Kindspace and the Youth Services Bureau on helping LGBTQ and homeless youth for over a decade. She was first elected in 2018 to the OCDSB, and is proud to be the first trans school board trustee in Canada.

I am in this role to make systemic change, because I believe that society needs passionate people to get involved; to leave the world a better place for our children than we received it from our parents.

My goal as an OCDSB Trustee is to identify and rectify the structural and systemic issues at the school board which could negatively impact student wellbeing or academic potential.

My policy positions have been profoundly influenced by my experience as a homeless teenager. I believe there are better systems possible for those struggling and in need, and I want to help build a society where the vulnerable aren't abandoned and left falling through the cracks.

Michael Sabia spent decades helming major Canadian companies before the Liberal government recruited him to be deputy minister of the federal Department of Finance in late 2020. He accepted the job, he said at the time, in order to drive an economic-growth agenda in Ottawa.


But so far, according to many with direct knowledge of the department’s inner workings, he has not been able to deliver that agenda, nor has he made headway on reining in public spending.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used his two minutes on the world stage at the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26) to urge other countries to follow Canada’s example and impose an escalating carbon tax on their citizens and businesses. Trudeau called for other countries to join together and introduce a series of carbon taxes that would cover 60 percent of global carbon emissions by 2030. His solicitation went unanswered.

Yet, PM Trudeau made a rash of pledges on behalf of Canadians. Canada is the only oil-producing country to announce that it is imposing a hard cap on emissions at today’s levels for the oil and gas sector. It is also phasing out all coal-fired electricity and will halt Canadian exports of thermal coal by 2030. The Canadian government will withdraw billions of dollars of its financial support for Canadian companies and pension plans that are invested in oil, coal, and natural gas projects internationally. Trudeau also gave away tens of millions of additional dollars to the treasure trove that Canadians have already pledged to U.N. climate change programs.

Is the Canadian Parliament, after the most important election in our lifetimes, even sitting?

It was on Aug. 15, 2021, that Canadians were alerted by their leader to a “pivotal moment,” one that was “maybe the most important since 1945, and certainly in our lifetimes.” What were the elements that gave our leader grounds for declaring that out of all the moments we have had since the Second World War — of which there were many — this moment was the “most important”?

Forgotten is 2015’s Trudeaumania, when it was all about him as the anti-Harper.

Six years later, it’s still all about him as the Liberal leader launched the campaign as a Trudeauerendum on his pandemic performance.

But three weeks after Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau started the victory lap for his vaccination procurement success, the Liberal party is flirting with a future in the Official Opposition – and it’s very much all because of him.

Vote 2021 is a most unnecessary election at a most inconvenient time and this prevailing view did not die quickly, as expected.

The pointlessness of it all is sticking to Trudeau as a defining negative in a campaign now almost halfway over.

The polls are dead-heating between Trudeau and Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole and the momentum is painted in a surging shade of blue.

With the spectre of a potential loss starting to register, Trudeau is clearly getting desperate.
