Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used his two minutes on the world stage at the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP26) to urge other countries to follow Canada’s example and impose an escalating carbon tax on their citizens and businesses. Trudeau called for other countries to join together and introduce a series of carbon taxes that would cover 60 percent of global carbon emissions by 2030. His solicitation went unanswered.

Yet, PM Trudeau made a rash of pledges on behalf of Canadians. Canada is the only oil-producing country to announce that it is imposing a hard cap on emissions at today’s levels for the oil and gas sector. It is also phasing out all coal-fired electricity and will halt Canadian exports of thermal coal by 2030. The Canadian government will withdraw billions of dollars of its financial support for Canadian companies and pension plans that are invested in oil, coal, and natural gas projects internationally. Trudeau also gave away tens of millions of additional dollars to the treasure trove that Canadians have already pledged to U.N. climate change programs.

Is the Canadian Parliament, after the most important election in our lifetimes, even sitting?

It was on Aug. 15, 2021, that Canadians were alerted by their leader to a “pivotal moment,” one that was “maybe the most important since 1945, and certainly in our lifetimes.” What were the elements that gave our leader grounds for declaring that out of all the moments we have had since the Second World War — of which there were many — this moment was the “most important”?

Forgotten is 2015’s Trudeaumania, when it was all about him as the anti-Harper.

Six years later, it’s still all about him as the Liberal leader launched the campaign as a Trudeauerendum on his pandemic performance.

But three weeks after Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau started the victory lap for his vaccination procurement success, the Liberal party is flirting with a future in the Official Opposition – and it’s very much all because of him.

Vote 2021 is a most unnecessary election at a most inconvenient time and this prevailing view did not die quickly, as expected.

The pointlessness of it all is sticking to Trudeau as a defining negative in a campaign now almost halfway over.

The polls are dead-heating between Trudeau and Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole and the momentum is painted in a surging shade of blue.

With the spectre of a potential loss starting to register, Trudeau is clearly getting desperate.
