Originally from Campinas, Brazil, Mr. Alves is head coach of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. Rodrigo has been a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2013, 3rd degree, earned under the tutelage of Professor Adriano Ribeiro Pires, 5th degree, of the Alliance Jiu-Jitsu team. Mr. Alves is recognized by the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), and has been practising the sport for 20 years and teaching since 2012. Rodrigo has participated in numerous competitions and has won titles and championships, at the regional, national and international level.


Jeerowel has been practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 2009. With a wrestling background, his passion and dedication for the arts is evident in his classes.


Ms. Page has been using her skill, knowledge, and patience to teach young students for over 20 years. With 30 years of Martial Arts experience and having competed Nationally and Internationally she has lots to teach our Junior BJJ and Muay Thai students.

I’ve been training here since January and I don’t see myself changing schools anytime soon. I’m hooked. The instructors are full time professionals in their disciplines, and they are all very approachable and will make time for students. They always emphasize the students are a team. We are all there to support each other and challenge our training partners to raise their levels! Many of the students compete regularly in regional, national, and international tournaments. The quality of the student body is high. When I attend class I feel like I’m learning from people who are professionals at what they do, which is literally true for some. Jiu Jitsu (or jujutsu) is a Japanese grappling martial art that roughly translates to “yielding technique.” Students are taught to use timing, balance, connection and redirection to overcome an opponent without relying on physical strength. This makes jiu jitsu an effective self-defense system for anyone, regardless of athletic ability, gender, or size. We train in a friendly atmosphere with participants of all levels working together and senior students taking on instructional roles. Jiu jitsu at the Ottawa Aikikai Dojo stands out for its high-energy classes and focus on modern self-defense while upholding its shared principles of community and martial spirit. Our classes foster a sense of friendship and camaraderie while allowing for a personalized training experience.


Tuesday and Thursday classes focus on Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu which is primarily an upright style with focus on self defense. Sessions begin with a warm up, usually followed by break falling practice, technical instruction, pressure testing, and ending with a cool down. We teach how to fall safely and how to defend against a variety of attacks including strikes, grappling, weapons, multiple attackers and ground work. Our comprehensive syllabus is designed to prepare our students for a wide variety of situations while maintaining a safe training environment. Our dynamic fast-paced training offers a great workout from day one.

Saturday mornings we run a class dedicated to ground fighting. These classes teach techniques that use jiu jitsu principles on the ground with a focus on pins and submissions. Ground fighting provides an opportunity to practice with resistive opponents in a semi-competitive setting.

Sunday afternoon sessions are run by special arrangement and can be on any number of topics. We typically confirm on Thursday classes whether a Sunday session will be run, so please confirm ahead of time!

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone, but only if taught correctly. While most BJJ schools have taken a “one-size-fits-all” approach to teaching the art, Gracie University has gone to great lengths to create specific programs for each demographic: Gracie Bullyproof for kids (ages 3-12), Women Empowered for the ladies, Gracie Combatives for beginner adults, and the Master Cycle for advanced practitioners. Each program adheres to a set curriculum, so students know exactly what they will learn before they come to class. Every student is issued an attendance card on which we track daily progress, so they can see how much they’ve accomplished and exactly what it will take to move on to the next level. In a martial art where confusion and frustration are extremely common, we’ve gone to great lengths to ensure that you will enjoy the highly-structured and encouraging approach only found at Certified Gracie Jiu-jitsu Training Centers.

At our CTCs, safety is the number one priority. In far too many BJJ schools, the classes are structured to meet the needs of the most elite students. If you are a beginner student, you are expected to serve as a “grappling dummy” for those above you. The thought process is, if you avoid injury, and stick around long enough, you will eventually figure it out. At our CTCs we take the opposite approach. Firstly, there is no competitive sparring in our beginner programs. As a result, you’ll have a chance to learn all the beginner techniques in a fully-cooperative environment, with like-minded training partners, for 8-12 months. Once you move on to the advanced program, and you begin sparring, you will have the benefit of working with training partners, of every skill level, who are working with you rather than against you. This culture of collaboration and mutual benefit is extremely rare in jiu-jitsu, and we go to great lengths to make sure it is upheld at all of our CTCs.

When it was originally founded by Grand Masters Carlos and Helio Gracie in the early 1900’s, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu only had one purpose – effectiveness in real fights. Several decades later, when sportive competition was introduced and popularized throughout Brazil and the US, there was a distinct shift in training objectives at most BJJ schools causing them to neglect the self-defense aspect of jiu-jitsu, such that students could train for many years without ever learning how their grappling skills would apply against a striking opponent in a real fight. At all Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Centers, street self-defense remains the top priority throughout all of our training programs. From your very first class, every technique you learn was specifically chosen due to it’s like likelihood of being used, and proven effectiveness, in real combat. Our belief is that only once a student learns all the necessary skills to stay safe in a real fight, should he or she begin exploring the sportive aspects of jiu-jitsu.
