4worldlovers: Lot 769 Prescott 1858 Treadwell Stampless Cover by Steamer, mailed Treadwell U.C JUN.16.1858 (manuscript double broken circle is the earliest recorded date, a few weeks after the post office opened) rated “3” handstamp to Cumberland (light receiver) through Ottawa. The cover was carried to Ottawa via the Steamer Phoenix (manuscript “Str Phoenix / JUN 17 / 58” on back) then back down river to Cumberland. Light aging, still rare and fine. Estimate C$150, sold for C$800.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.


Lot 328 Canada #3051 2017 “P” Recalled Hanukkah First Day Cover, an official first day cover, incorrectly showing the Star of David on back, which was recalled on the day of issue, NOV.14.2017. Very fine, and accompanied by the corrected one. Quite a scarce FDC. Unitrade CV$400, sold for C$325.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 346 Canada #CLCA7 1929 60c Brown Colombia SCADTA with CA Overprint, a mint never hinged upper left corner block of four, a remarkably fresh and extremely fine block, with pristine gum, which is usually found with tropical staining. A very rare and seldom offered item, especially in this condition. Unitrade CV$2,700, sold for C$2,000.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 422 Newfoundland #30 1866 13c Orange Ship, mint with full original gum, never hinged and quite fresh, a very fine stamp. Unitrade CV$900, sold for C$750.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 115 Canada #71 1897 six cent brown Queen Victoria Leaf, mint never hinged with superb centering, a fresh and extremely fine stamp. Unitrade CV$600, sold for C$450.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 436 Newfoundland #191P 5c Caribou, Die II Plate Proof in Red Violet, a left sheet margin pair, printed on “bookend” bond paper with blue “moiré” lines on back. The sheet margin at left shows lathework, and the stamps measure 20.4 mm wide (as opposed to 21 mm wide for Waterlow printings). Rare, with only 50 pairs recorded, and only 10 of those with lathework. Unitrade CV$300, sold for C$225.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 396 New Brunswick #2 1851 6d Olive Yellow Heraldic Imperforate on Bluish Paper, used with very fine strike of the #23 in oval grid cancel from Richibucto (RF 6, rare). The stamp has four lovely margins, bright colour and is quite fresh, very fine. Accompanied by a 1989 Peter Holcombe certificate. Unitrade CV$1,600, sold for C$1,450.00 plus 17% buyer’s premium.

Lot 809 Wentworth 1828 Money Letter with the Earliest Known Hamilton Postmark, a stampless folded letter mailed at Hamilton on OCT.31.1828 (manuscript precursor, written by postmaster A.R. Smith), rated 1/6 which is 4 times the 4½ rate for 1oz and distance of 48 miles, with one sheet (cover) and three enclosures (currency bills). The letter is datelined “Burlington Canal”, one of the many surrounding towns of Hamilton at the time. This is not only the earliest of the “postmarks” from this postmaster, but is the earliest of all known Hamilton postmarks. Very fine, ex-Cloutier and still on his exhibit page. Estimate $750.
