OCTEVAW provides a communal advocacy platform and a uniting voice for more than 30 local member agencies, all of which share the common goal of eliminating gender-based violence.

Our membership is made up of 35 local non-partisan, non-profit organizations, in addition to 10+ non-voting, participants members, such as municipal departments and police services. OCTEVAW is also proud to welcome many individual voting members.

OCTEVAW was born out of a need for a community forum to take action on gender-based violence. After the City of Ottawa struck a Task Force on Wife Assault in 1984, organized advocacy was needed to ensure task force’s recommendations were implemented, and momentum sustained.

OCTEVAW focuses its resources on public education, harm reduction, and survivor-centric campaigns. Our work is only able to continue with the invaluable support of our community. Through our countless fundraisers and events, we foster feminist communities while funding societal change.

OCTEVAW recognizes that gender-based violence does not have one easy fix. It is an intersectional and multifaceted issue, requiring an intersectional and multifaceted response. That’s why OCTEVAW has launched 11 campaigns and projects and counting, with our focus ranging from violence in tech, to tackling toxic masculinity, to producing resources for members of the media who seek to improve the way they represent survivors and their stories.

We focus on advocacy through campaigns, seminars, workshops, and the creation of resources so that our member organizations can focus their energies on the vital frontline work that many of them conduct.

The coalition model was conceived as a community-based grassroots and collaborative approach. It was based on a clear understanding that the power to influence public policy rested on an organized, broad and cohesive constituency that could articulate its purpose and reflect women’s experiences and the view of service providers at the ground level.

We host, co-sponsor, and collaborate on a variety of community events, from feminist mixers, to panels and debates on pressing political issues. Please join us!

Pauktuutit is the national representative organization of Inuit women in Canada and is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors from across Canada. We foster greater awareness of the needs of Inuit women, advocate for equality and social improvements, and encourage Inuit women’s full participation in the community, regional and national life of Canada.

Pauktuutit has been advocating for the social, cultural, political, and economic betterment of Inuit women, their families, and communities since 1984, building a rich history.

Pilimmaksarniq is the result of a five-year Engaging Inuit Men and Boys in Ending Violence Against Women and Girls project meant to increase awareness and to strengthen coping skills among Inuit men and boys in an effort to reduce gender-based violence within Inuit communities.

To mark the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) on May 5, 2023, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada has unveiled The Red Amautiit Project.

It is a strengths-based tool ensuring that an Inuit-specific GBA+ lens is applied consistently and in consultation with Pauktuutit. It is based on the understanding that Inuit women, gender-diverse people and their communities have existing strengths, experience, and capabilities that make them adaptable and vibrant.

Meeting Survivors’ Needs: Gender-Based Violence Against Inuit Women and the Criminal Justice System

Gender-based violence refers to physical and sexual assaults against women and is a serious issue for Inuit women of all ages. The criminal justice system has been granted a key role in responding to this violence.

Inuit women, children and 2SLGBTQIAA+ people face unique challenges and barriers to housing. For those who experience gender-based violence, a shelter is often a first step to rebuilding their lives and protecting them from further violence.

Our ‘Beauty in Brain Difference’ campaign is grounded in recognizing the strengths and challenges unique to people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Together let’s end FASD stigma and ensure all Inuit have support, care and community.

Let’s Talk About Ujarak is a cannabis resource toolkit, guided by Inuit values and created to help Inuit increase their knowledge about cannabis use and how to reduce possible harms.

NATIONAL INUIT ACTION PLAN on Missing and Murdered Inuit Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People

The National Inuit Action Plan is dedicated to missing and murdered Inuit women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people and their families, friends and communities that have experienced these relentless tragedies.

To further our work toward improving Inuit youth and families’ safety and awareness, and by enhancing the empowerment of Inuit girls and engaging boys in violence prevention, Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada delivered Ikajuqatigiiniq: Inuit Youth Pathways toViolence Prevention, a four-day leadership virtual camp, which sought out Inuit youth participants from across Inuit Nunangat and urban centres.

The purpose of the IWBN is to connect Inuit women across Inuit Nunangat who own a business or are interested in starting one – no experience required! The IWBN is made by Inuit businesswomen for Inuit businesswomen and anyone is welcome to join!
