The Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery and meditation centre is established to preserve the Theravada Buddhist teaching in the Western world. The provision of facilities for ordained monks to practice the noble teaching, disseminate the Buddhist teaching among lay people (i.e. morality (Sila), concentration (Samadhi), wisdom (Panna)), and teaching noble qualities such as tolerance, hospitality, compassion, and loving kindness are our objectives.

The City of Ottawa approved the building permit to renovate the existing building of Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery. Constructions needs to be started in June 2022.

The Ottawa Buddhist Vihare, which is also the home of the Ottawa inter-community Buddhist Society, the purpose of which, is to provide a place and the needed resources to those who are seeking the needed spiritual life. The Ottawa inter-community Buddhist society comprises of Buddhists with origins in Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Lao, Bangaladesh, Chinese, Thai, Malaysian, Indian and Nepalese; and also, both Buddhists and non-Buddhists, from Canada, Russia and Mexico. All of them come together to seek that spiritual life.


The Ottawa Inter-Community Buddhist Society was around 15 years ago. The present location, a few blocks south of Ottawa’s Parliament buildings, came to being in March 2013. The Ottawa Inter-Community Buddhist Society was the brain-child of Venerable Dr. Walasmulle Sirisumana Thero. Today, under the guidance of Dr. Walasmulle Sirisumana Thero, several monks reside permanently at the premises with the intent to help those seeking that spiritual life.

We are a registered Canadian charity with two mandates: to uphold and nurture the Buddha Dharma in Canada and to support the refugee children living at Namdroling Monastery in Byla Kuppe, South India. The Ottawa Palyul Centre welcomes diversity in all its forms and offers you a safe space in which to practice and discuss the Dharma.


Vajrayana deity yoga practices are held on the 8th, 10th, 15th, 25th & 29th of the lunar month.

FALL PROGRAM NEWS – We are very excited about our upcoming programs which will include the following (stay tuned for more details to come):

Palyul invitations – We have invited Khenpo Kunsang Dechen to come to teach at the Centre. We have also asked Lama Pasang to come to the Centre to help us with our daily practices.

Teachings on the ‘Perfections’ by Khenmo Karma Zangmo (from Namdroling Monastery) on Zoom.

*CO-VID PROTOCOL – Good news! We have lifted the Co-vid protocols at the Centre. If, however, you are feeling ill, or experiencing any cold or cough symptoms, please refrain from coming to the centre.

*Inhouse practices – For our tsok practices, we will either follow Khenpo Norgay & Lama Pasang live at the NYC Centre or a previous Zoom recording of Khenchen Guru & Lama Samdup or Khenchen live in Ohio.

*Liturgy & Texts – We do have hard copy texts available at the Centre, but if you are joining an in-house practice, please feel free to bring a device on which you can follow the liturgy.

2022 Activities – We are happy to report that we were able to host a wonderful teaching on the Kuntuzangpo Prayer by Khenchen Guru. We also received teachings on the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva from Lopon Rigzin Losal and meditation practice sessions with Ani Samten Choedron. As part of our support for English language learning for the Namdroling Lopons, we hosted a 3-part teaching program by the senior Lopons.
