Queensway Preschool offers an educational program based on the belief that children learn through play. Given a balance of free play and teacher directed activities, the toddler and preschool children grow and develop socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually.

It is the philosophy of Queensway Preschool to recognize that each child is unique; therefore, our program must focus on the individual needs and abilities of each child. We do this knowing that early childhood should be a time of fun, warmth, security, exploration and discovery. The Preschool is committed to working toward achieving the following goals:

To provide experiences at the child’s level to promote the child’s self worth and to give the child a better understanding of the world around him/her.

To provide an atmosphere that offers a safe place and encourages social- emotional, physical, and intellectual growth of the child as a whole.

All teachers are experienced, Registered Early Childhood Educators and Headstart Program Workers. Staff are involved in professional development and specialized training regularly, including First Aid and CPR. Many have additional education and experience.

Queensway Preschool is situated within the Parkdale United Church, at the corner of Gladstone Avenue and Parkdale Avenue in Ottawa.

Transportation is provided for children who live within designated boundaries: our geographical area is defined by the east side of Island Park Drive to the north side of Carling Avenue to the west side of Bronson Avenue to the north side of Catherine Street to the west side of Bay Street to the north side of Gloucester Street to the west side of Lyon Street to the Ottawa River. Art, sensory activities, music and dramatic play to encourage social development and creativity

Indoor and outdoor play on climbing equipment, tricycles and ride on toys etc. to help children gain confidence, coordination and strength. Queensway preschool has a lovely outdoor playground.

Science and nature activities encourage children to question, wonder and explore the world of nature

Social skills are learned with guidance and through experiences with imaginative play

Headstart programs in Ottawa are partnering with First Words, the preschool speech and language program of Ottawa and Renfrew County. This collaboration will provide families who have been referred to First Words, the opportunity to access a speech and language assessment onsite at the school if there are barriers to accessing this service at a First Words location. Following this assessment, the necessary referrals will be made to support the child’s communication development. First Words services are offered in both English and French

Parents are encouraged to participate in family events offered through Queensway Preschool. In addition, families are encouraged to participate in the parenting programs, health, community and social services of Somerset West Community Health Centre.

REKSAP Centres For Early Learning at Regina was established by a group of parents and the Principal (Meryl Bogart) of Regina Street Public School in 1984. In 2006, the Principal at Severn Public School (Dave Petrie) was instrumental in the expansion of our program to Severn Public School. We have expanded over the years to meet the needs of our community. We are a licensed, non-profit child care program operating Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., 12 months of the year. Our Board of Directors is comprised of parents and community members.


REKSAP Centres for Early Learning provides a safe, well-supervised facility with comfortable atmosphere in which the daily program meets the needs and interests of the participating children. The program goals are to provide both individual and group learning opportunities in both indoor and outdoor environments. The curriculum is designed to allow flexible, spontaneous activities based on the children's interests. Following the Early Learning for Every Child Today document and How does Learning Happen, our Registered Early Childhood Educators provide a stimulating, educational, play-based environment which guides the children's learning, enhances their knowledge and meets their individual developmental needs.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) licenses REKSAP Centres For Early Learning under the Child Care and Early Years Act. The Centre is required to meet all the regulations of this Act, including health and fire regulations dictated by the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Fire Marshal, and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

City of Ottawa and the Ministry of Education provides funding for:
