I came to the art of sculpture relatively late in life. As a young woman I studied Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba but opted for a different career path. A little over twenty years ago, I was fortunate enough to resume my pursuit of art which had always gravitated towards portraiture. While I achieved success in drawing and painting portraits, it wasn’t until I tried my hand at sculpting that I knew that I had found my true passion in life.
I have shown my work in various art shows and galleries in the Toronto area and I have executed dozens of commissioned portraits. I was commissioned to sculpt the portrait of philanthropist/developer Maxwell Rice. His bronzed bust, on a granite pedestal, is installed in the main entrance of the William Osler Hospital in Brampton Ontario.
I was commissioned to sculpt the bust of Roy Heenan, founder of Heenan Blaikie Law firm. Mr. Heenan was named an officer of the Order of Canada, in recognition for being one of Canada’s leading labour lawyers as well as his significant contribution to the art world.
The sculpture of Mayor Hazel McCallion was installed in the Hazel McCallion Campus of Sheridan College. She was mayor of Mississauga, the fifth largest city in Canada, from 1978 until her retirement in 2014. I am proud to have had the opportunity to honor such an iconic woman.
I displayed a body of work at The Homer Watson Gallery in Kitchener Ontario. The show consisted of eleven sculptures displaying a variety of emotions. It was interactive in that the viewer could consider what feelings were being evoked and then lift a flap to discover what I had in mind.

Oversized roadside signs along suburban routes advertise motels, restaurants and gas stations; they may reach the height of several stories while advertising little more than a snack bar. Their relationship to these sites is often disproportionate, which subsequently makes their sculptural qualities so appealing. The size of these arrows is not defined by the actual size of the site or object they refer to, it is rather the size of the roads and highways and the speed of passing traffic that dictates their scale. In this way the arrow can be read as the most reduced symbol of a cartographic annotation beyond scale. In the face of readily available high-definition satellite photography and street view maps, the arrow bridges the real and the virtual and creates an enhanced reality. With this sculpture the arrows do not single out anything in particular, but their density creates a place, while simultaneously signaling beyond it.
As the sculpture transforms the traversed space of the roundabout into an illusory map, it also points at the endless possibilities. The arrow is a didactic instrument that communicates, directs, guides and gives sense. It explains and specifies. It validates. The arrow is a tool of persuasion. Like the pointing finger of a questioning child, this sculpture will create curiosity and it will propose to ask a multiplicity of questions in an attempt to reconsider assumed direction and premeditated assumptions.

Cristina Vasilenco: Possibilities is a public art piece by Montreal based artist Michel de Broin. Colourful arrows sculpture was installed in late 2012. Possibilities is located in the roundabout in front of Sheridan College Mississauga campus. It is the intersection of Square One Drive and Duke of York Blvd., cross the corner of the Square One shopping mall.
