4worldlovers: Located in Brampton, Ontario, the Goreway Power Station is an 875 MW natural gas fueled, combined cycle facility. The facility can provide electricity to Ontario’s power grid 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, but primarily operates during intermediate and peak demand periods. Capital Power acquired Goreway Power Station in June 2019 from Goreway Power Station Holdings Inc., which is jointly owned by JERA Co. Inc., and Toyota Tsusho Corporation. The facility has a 20-year Accelerated Clean Energy Supply Contract expiring in June 2029 with the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).Capital Power is proposing a new energy project for the Goreway Power Station. The project is in response to the call for new power generation and capacity being administered by the IESO.

To augment the site’s existing natural features and to provide additional visual screening, additional features have been introduced across the site including a storm water management pond, berms, a variety of plants, shrubs and tree plantings

Capital Power is exploring the potential of installing a Battery Energy Storage System (“BESS”) at the Goreway Power Station, which is located at 8600 Goreway Drive.

The project is in response to the call for new power generation and capacity being administered by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (the “IESO”). The BESS would have an output of up to 50 megawatts and would be located within the footprint of the existing site and would create no air emissions

The BESS would store energy to help meet power demand spikes when renewable energy is not sufficient to meet load (i.e. power demand). The BESS would be charged during times when there is a surplus electricity available on the system, which would generally occur during the off-peak hours and would discharge energy during the time of system need, which is generally during the peak demand or when there is a disruption in supply in the system. With the combination of the existing facility and the proposed BESS, Goreway will help meet increasing local and provincial demand by providing critical backup generation support to the Ontario grid that is reliable (there when you need it) and flexible in support of intermittent renewable sources of generation.

In December 2021, the IESO released its Annual Planning Outlook (“APO”) which identified significant need for capacity at both the bulk system and regional levels. At the system level the IESO is projecting an increasing deficit of generation capacity starting in 2025. The primary causes for the estimated shortfall are 1) an increase in load growth; 2) lack of investment in new supply; and 3) retirement and refurbishment of Ontario’s nuclear fleet.

The need is greatest in the GTA area. The deficit, with the assumption that all existing generators remain in operation and are available, reaches 5,000 MW by around 2035 and almost 10,000 MW around 2042.

In addition to approvals from the City of Brampton, additional approvals will be required from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP). Public consultation activities will be undertaken as part of these regulatory processes.
