4worldlovers: For the 2023 - 2024 school year, Londonderry School is full in planned classes in Grades 7 to 9 in the regular program. We will now only accept resident students in Grades 7 to 9 who have newly moved into the school’s attendance area. A resident student of Edmonton Public Schools has at least one parent or legal guardian living in Edmonton who is not Roman Catholic. Non-resident students can enroll in another Division school with space in planned classes.

Londonderry Junior High School is known for its longstanding “Tradition of Excellence”. We expect excellent results from all students. Our achievement results on the provincial achievement tests indicate our students continue to perform very well in all four core subject areas (Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies). All staff members work together to create a school focused on student learning. Our teachers, who are passionate and knowledgeable about their subject areas, design instruction and assessments so that students are engaged in and responsible for their learning. Our teaching assistants provide small group assistance for struggling learners. To encourage students to be lifelong readers, our extensive library provides current high interest books. Our office staff assists students daily with inquiries, concerns, and maintaining school operations. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our Londonderry students, parents and community members. My name is Ed Charpentier and I am the Principal of this amazing school. It is amazing how things work out in our lives. I was a student of Londonderry Junior High, as well as a teacher for a couple of years. I grew up right across the field from Londonderry and have many fond memories from my childhood in relation to this neighborhood and school.

At Londonderry we pride ourselves in our commitment to academic excellence and place a very high value on the importance of providing a caring and supportive environment for learning. We believe that all children can reach their potential with guidance and hard work and know it does not matter where they start but where they finish. We also understand that they will make mistakes throughout their lives and we will support them as they navigate their learning and growth at our school.

We have over 720 wonderful, full of life students here at our school. Londonderry is a district site for Academic Enrichment Program, Opportunity and the Mandarin Bilingual Program. We also have an Academic Success Centre which is available for students requiring extra time to complete assessments or for those needing additional assistance. Ability, Character, and Citizenship are the foundations of the belief system at Riverbend Junior High School. Students continually strive to maximize their abilities and stretch their limits. We believe in being of high moral character and always demonstrating and finding the best in each of us. We expect all members of the Riverbend family to continue to show the kindness and consideration that is good citizenship.

I once read a book entitled, “Teach Like a Champion” by Doug Lemov. Mr. Lemov served as a teacher, trainer, consultant and administrator during his career and observed many teachers, both good and bad, over the years. Mr. Lemov became intrigued by what exactly separated the good teachers from the great teachers and decided to write a book about what tools excellent teachers use to separate themselves from the good teachers.

Riverbend School takes pride in hiring talented teachers. We know the importance of having great teachers in our school. When a teaching position is being filled, the screening and interviewing process is very intense. We thoroughly comb through the application materials. We look hard at the transcripts to ensure that the applicant took challenging courses and received good grades in those courses. We also dig into the educational philosophy of each candidate. We know that it takes a certain type of teacher to be successful at Riverbend and we work hard at finding ones that agree with “The Riverbend Way.” And of course, we want the teachers that are able to connect with children.

But just what is it that makes a great teacher? What types of things were identified by Mr. Lemov in his book, “Teach Like a Champion?” Listed below are some of the key chapters that address what it takes to be a great teacher. I am proud to say that for the most part, our teachers are “spot on” in these areas:

1. Setting High Academic Expectations – The teachers know that at Riverbend we want to raise the academic bar as high as possible. There is no room for “academic fluff” in our curriculum. The content is demanding and rich for our junior high students.

2. Planning that Ensures Academic Achievement – The beauty of collaborative planning time is that our grade level and content teachers are able to effectively plan how to cover the information in a given year. Our teachers know the importance of developing curriculum maps, unit organizers and lesson plans. Our teachers are well-planned and well-prepared.

3. Structuring and Delivering Your Lessons – There are many creative and effective ways to deliver the content. The teachers at Riverbend School are encouraged to utilize a variety of methods in delivering the content. The number one priority is to make sure the students get the pertinent information, but we also encourage the teachers to do so in a way that is exciting and engaging.

4. Engaging Students in Your Lessons – It is important to get the students excited about the topic. Often times that means providing a “hook” to peak their interest. Students also like to know the relevance of the content. The awesome teachers of Riverbend do a masterful job of getting the students engaged in the lesson.

5. Creating a Strong Classroom Culture – Riverbend School has worked hard at establishing this – thus the term “The Riverbend Way.” We often receive visitors who marvel over the behavior of our students in the classrooms and hallways. Our teachers do a magnificent job of establishing a positive, healthy culture in their classrooms. Routines, traditions, celebrations and procedures are firmly in place.

6. Setting and Maintaining High Behavioral Expectations – Another area of emphasis at our school. Our students know that they are to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes the learning environment. Dress code is one thing that helps in this area as well. Students are expected to be respectful and responsible. Our teachers never tire of doing what is right and never tire of holding their students to that same standard.

I have been with Edmonton Public Schools for the past 27 years, during which I have served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. A Kindergarten student who is a resident and lives in the school's attendance area may still register. We will only accept resident students in Grades 1 to 9 who have newly moved into the school’s attendance area for the regular program. A resident student of Edmonton Public Schools has at least one parent or legal guardian living in Edmonton who is not Roman Catholic. Non-resident students can enroll in another Division school with space in planned classes.

Due to Dr. Donald Massey School nearing its capacity limits for enrolment, it has moved to Level 2 on EPSB’s Growth Model. It is now a closed boundary school and as outlined in Division regulations, the only new students that will be accepted to our school (including our Kindergarten program) during pre-enrolment are:

Resident students who live within the primary attendance areas of Matt Berry and Hollick Kenyon.

Siblings of current students who will be returning to the school the following year, unless otherwise determined by the Superintendent for a particular school.

If the student you are registering or pre-enrolling meets one of these criteria, please register them online (new students) or pre-enrol through SchoolZone (existing students).

Following the close of pre-enrolment, the school will only accept resident students who have newly moved into the primary attendance area or resident students eligible for Kindergarten.

Additional documentation may be required, including additional address documents, or immigration documents for students who are not Canadian citizens.

The Dr. Donald Massey School community serves students in Grades K-9 and wants to ensure the safety of all our students. We require that all our parents/guardians follow safety standards when dropping off or picking up their children from school.

Parents are still welcome to use one of several drop off areas near our school. Make arrangements to pick-up your child at the same location as drop-off. These include:

The corner of 54 street and 159 avenue (by the Hollick-Kenyon Park sign - students would walk across the school field).

Parents are not allowed to use the staff parking lot when dropping off students.

Our school supports almost 1000 students from Grades K-9.
