Since 1992, the Emerald Awards have showcased almost 400 recipients and 900 finalists who are raising the bar in addressing environmental and climate change issues. These environmental awards celebrate excellence across all sectors, making them unique not only in Alberta but also in Canada.

Our Sharing Stories program tells the stories of the organizations, projects, and individuals across Alberta who are working to protect our environment and take action against climate change. By telling these stories, we hope to educate and inspire people within and outside of Alberta to take action in their own lives and help create a more sustainable planet!

Solstice Environmental Management resides and works on the ancestral and traditional territories of Indigenous peoples in Treaty 6, Treaty 7, and Treaty 8. Out of respect, and in the spirit of truth, and reconciliation, we acknowledge that these are home to many First Nations such as the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuliné (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinabae (Saulteaux) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, and Metis peoples. We honour the intimate connection that the Indigenous Peoples of Canada share with this traditional territory and wish to further empower Indigenous sovereignty of land management through a partnership grounded in a mutual respect of Mother Earth. We believe we have much to learn and share in our desire to protect the natural landscapes and sacred lands that were first cared for by the Indigenous People of Canada.

Nature Alberta is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing nature appreciation and conservation in Alberta. Through a variety of outreach programs we encourage Albertans to learn about nature, experience nature, and protect nature. We also oversee the Alberta Nature Network, composed of over 40 nature clubs located across the province.

Alberta is home to 628 species of spiders, representing almost half of those recorded in Canada. That’s more than the number of bird species we have in the province. Despite this great diversity, you are unlikely to encounter more than a small fraction of these species because many of them are either too small, have cryptic behaviours, or live in remote habitats.


I spent several years working on red squirrels with the Kluane Red Squirrel Project based in the Yukon. Living and working in such a beautiful, remote place was thrilling, but what surprised me was how much I fell in love with red squirrels. They taught me a lot, and I would like to share with you some of the things I’ve learned.
